Business Leaders Celebrate the Return of TechNExt, the North East’s Premier Tech Festival

TechNExt, the leading technology festival in the North East, is set to return in 2024, building on the success of its inaugural event last year. The festival’s official launch took place last week at the Opencast offices in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The 2023 edition of TechNExt spanned five days in June, attracting over 3,000 attendees and featuring 52 community-led fringe events in addition to its main attractions. It showcased the North East’s rapidly growing tech scene and the critical role of collaboration within the sector.

TechNExt 2024 will expand on the previous year’s achievements, returning with four flagship events—the mainstage conference, industry dinner, Tech Talent Live, and the festival party—along with an array of new fringe events.

A notable addition in 2024 is a schools’ challenge, aimed at partnering with regional schools to ignite student interest in technology and highlight the sector’s vast opportunities. Furthermore, the festival will continue to emphasize the Good Festival Ambition, promoting sustainable, diverse, and inclusive event practices.

David Dunn, CEO of Sunderland Software City, remarked: “TechNExt 2023 set a new benchmark for tech events in our region. It has been instrumental in showcasing the North East as a hub of technology innovation and talent. The overwhelming response to last year’s event underscores the vibrancy of our tech community and reaffirms the significance of its return in 2024.”

Sarah Thackray, Director at Dynamo North East and BeaconHouse Events, shared her enthusiasm: “As we gear up for TechNExt 2024, we are eager to maintain this momentum, uniting the brightest minds in technology and business. TechNExt is more than a celebration of technology; it is a platform that fosters sustainable and inclusive practices, with our Good Festival Ambition at the core of this commitment.”

The festival has received endorsement from Saqib Bhatti MP, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy: “The North East’s tech sector exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in driving regional development. Its remarkable growth and dynamic spirit are the results of a shared commitment to technological progress and are rightfully celebrated through events like TechNExt.”

Opencast chief executive Tom Lawson also expressed his support: “We are thrilled to continue as a headline sponsor of TechNExt. This festival not only celebrates the North East’s tech sector but also plays a crucial role in its growth. Last year we hosted five fringe events, including significant discussions with local and national figures. I encourage everyone to join us in 2024 and contribute to what promises to be another landmark event.”

TechNExt 2024 promises to be a pivotal gathering for tech experts, startups, students, and the broader business community, offering a unique platform for sharing ideas and promoting growth.
