How to succeed in the competitive wedding photography market

More sunshine, longer days and warmer weather all tell us that the main wedding season is just around the corner. Over a quarter of couples get married in the summer and more than one in ten book their weddings in May, so there’s no doubt that the demand for skilled wedding photographers will be on the rise in the coming weeks.

In anticipation of the upcoming busy wedding season, leading camera insurer photoGuard has created a helpful guide, filled with tips and hints to help wedding photographers capture the perfect shots.

“Wedding photography can be one of the most exciting and rewarding jobs. However, it is better to be prepared to avoid stress on the busy day,” says Alex Bennett, head of marketing.

And, despite best intentions, wedding plans and ceremony timings can quickly fall by the wayside amid the chaos of the big day. So how can photographers ensure that it all runs like clockwork?

Have a contingency plan

Have plans in place in case the ceremony is running behind, if the light’s not quite right, and for other unforeseen circumstances. This allows you to adjust plans accordingly and ensures photographers can capture every important moment. A well-prepared photography kit is a must for every wedding photographer, and that means lights, tripods, lenses and more. Being prepared for any situation will ensure that photographers are able to deliver stunning images that meet and exceed their client’s expectations.

Delegate key tasks

It is not uncommon to run into difficulties like finding that last bridesmaid or getting everyone in one place, which can stand in the way of capturing the perfect shot. The best thing a photographer can do is to ask for help, whether it is an uncle or a sister-in-law who can assist with getting everyone together. Giving a job to other wedding guests tends to not only be helpful, but also they’ll often appreciate the chance to be a more significant part of the big day.

Factor the location into the pricing

While everything in London is more expensive, travelling to a national park or remote castle can allow photographers to charge more. If they are willing to travel, the bride and groom-to-be should be happy to pay extra for their photographer. Location is a key factor when selecting a wedding photography pricing, as no photographer wants their work to go under-priced and under-valued.

Wedding photography requires constant learning on the job. However, in addition to developing the photography skills, self-promotion is an important factor to consider. While word of mouth can do wonders for a new wedding photographer, having a professional-looking website and social media is necessary. If potential clients cannot find the photographer or see their work, they are unlikely to choose them in the first place. Consequently, establishing a strong online presence is critical to successfully stand out in the competitive wedding photography market.
